I’m no productivity wonk, but advice about it is hard to dodge. Everyone and his cat knows the popular tips — we’re all wise to checking e-mail once daily or delegating inboxes completely. We know multitasking isn’t a thing, it’s only task switching, and it slows us down by up to 40%.

So I was surprised when two business influencers —Jessi Hempel, who hosts LinkedIn’s Hello Monday podcast, and Adam Grant, a well-known author and professor at the Wharton School–admitted that e-mail and task switching help them write!

Hempel types small amounts between other tasks to reduce production pressure, and Grant answers e-mails to ease through a bout of writer’s block. Interesting!

The takeaway? Stay flexible with productivity advice. What actually works for you may be surprising.
